The Automotive Centre of Excellence (ACE) at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) is a unique, one of a kind project – it being a single facility that combines Academic Education and Commercial Research.
In addition, Sherbourne Common’s LEED Gold certification for their Neighbourhood Development program was ensured by including the choice of concrete as a material for features of the park. Recycled content in the mix designs assisted in achieving this LEED status.
The purposes of the Technical Centre are: to provide a showcase demonstrating the use of innovative ready mixed concrete options in construction; to provide a state-of-the-art concrete research, testing and development facility; and to demonstrate a concrete commitment to the principles of sustainable construction.
Concrete was a major contributor to this largest single highway contract. The use of a wave pattern form liner was used on the parapet walls on all the bridges and a textured form liner was used for the supporting columns on the Lake Street bridge.
Our schematic design identified reinforced concrete as the best option in terms of its ability to provide a robust and economical structure. Concrete was also adopted for aesthetic reasons, with the Architect choosing to express architectural concrete columns and slab soffits around the day-lit perimeter of the building.
